The program offers a wide range of settlement services for newcomers 55 years of age and over.

 

Entry For Seniors - Group Orientations

A settlement orientation for newcomers 55 or older. Participants will learn about living in Manitoba, Canada and topics covering:

  • Canadian laws and culture
  • Health and safety
  • Housing
  • Transportation
  • Money and banking
  • Housing and community information
 
 

English Language Program for Seniors

An opportunity for older adults to:

  • Learn English needed to do everyday tasks such as going to the doctor, shopping, banking
  • Connect with other older adults in their community
  • Learn about programs and services for older adults in Winnipeg

Levels Literacy to CLB 4

Classes are three times per week for two hours per class at two locations in Winnipeg.

To attend the English Language Program for Seniors students must go to WELARC for a language assessment and referral.

 
 
I AM VERY HAPPY TO BE ABLE TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN THE A & O PROGRAM. BEING HERE FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS GAVE ME THE CONFIDENCE TO SPEAK A LITTLE BIT BETTER THAN BEFORE. I FIND MY TEACHERS AND THE STAFF VERY KIND AND CONSIDERATE. IT IS HERE THAT I FOUND MANY FRIENDS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.
 
 

English Conversation  Circles For Seniors

An opportunity for older adults to:

  • Practice their English skills
  • Meet other older adults from their community and around the world
  • Learn more about programs and services for older adults in Winnipeg
 
 

Settlement Worker

  • Provides information about community programs and services
  • Assists and connects programs and services to older adults
  • Helps with forms and documents
  • Gives opportunities to build companionship with older adults in the community
 
 
MY DAD'S ENGLISH LANGUAGE HAS IMPROVED SINCE HE ATTENDED THE PROGRAM FOR SENIOR IMMIGRANTS AT A & O. HE HAS GAINED CONFIDENCE IN SPEAKING ENGLISH AND I'M VERY GLAD THAT HE CAN NOW COMMUNICATE WITH HIS GRANDCHILDREN.
 
 

SISS Volunteer Opportunities:

English Conversation Circle Facilitator
Assists participants in the program to achieve greater fluency and confidence in the English language through conversation in an informal group setting.

We work with community organizations that serve older adults and cultural groups and educate them about issues related to Safety & Security, Social Engagement and Counselling.
